Understanding Value

What is spot price?

Spot price is the global reference price for one troy ounce of pure metal, traded on international markets. It is the starting point for any conversation about value — not the amount paid for a finished piece.

Why is gold priced per troy ounce?

Precious metals are traded in troy ounces, which are heavier than the ounces used for everyday goods: one troy ounce is about 31.1 grams, versus roughly 28.3 grams. Mixing the two is the most common reason home estimates come out wrong.

How does karat purity change value?

Karat describes how much of a piece is pure gold. 24K is essentially pure, 18K is 75 percent, 14K about 58 percent and 10K about 42 percent. A heavy 10K chain can be worth less than a lighter 18K one.

Why does an offer differ from the melt figure?

Metal content is only one input. Brand, craftsmanship, stones, condition, documentation and current demand all move the number — sometimes far above melt for collectible watches and jewelry.
